Winter Nights Update

Late last week, the faith communities of Contra Costa County—which for more than two decades have provided unhoused families with safe and welcoming shelter during the coldest and wettest months of the year—learned that the Board of Winter Nights Family Shelter, the umbrella organization coordinating this ministry, had voted to cease operations.

We deeply lament this decision and recognize its impact on the families who depend upon this vital ministry, as well as on the congregations, volunteers, donors, and community partners who have sustained it throughout the years.

Our faith communities are now coming together to discern how we can continue serving the most vulnerable members of our community in the weeks, months, and years ahead. Our next stakeholder meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 24, at 1:00 p.m. at Christ the King Parish in Pleasant Hill.

Please keep in your prayers all those affected by this decision, especially the families who would have benefited from the shelter, hospitality, and support offered by our congregations.

Although the umbrella organization may cease to exist, the commitment, compassion, and desire to serve among our faith communities remain strong. Together, we hope to identify a responsible and sustainable path forward that preserves the heart and mission of Winter Nights.
